Review
Focus produce a huge range of hardtails in many wheels sizes. This model is the Raven 27R 4.0 and is the entry level 27.5" carbon Raven platform. At a quick glance there is not much to distinguish the 27 and 29 inch frames. They both feature beautiful lines from the chunky tapered head tube down to the thin seat stays - and they both look fast!
The 27.5" wheel is a compromise between 26" and 29" which are both available from Focus. It is true that most XC racers, at which the Raven is targeted, would use the 29er with its obvious advantages once the momentum kicks in. On a tighter more technical course however, a 27.5" wheel makes sense. It has the greater maneuverability of a 26 with better standing start acceleration and lower stance than a 29er.
The ride has been described as purposeful but also comfortable. This is due no doubt to the clever use of carbon tubes. The seatstays and interesting rear dropout design act like a leaf spring which reduces vibration, impact and rider fatigue over longer distances. This would be a great enduro race bike.
As this is the entry level you expect to see some lesser component choices. I am not going to nitpick, but suffice it to say that the Raven platform is definitely a frame worthy of some upgrades.
The bottom line is this is a great starting point for a budding, yet serious XC racer who would also like a comfortable all-day training bike. Among a truly massive range the biggest drawback is deciding which model to buy!
The Focus Raven 27R 4.0 is an XC racer's dream, all at an affordable price. The advanced carbon frame and Manitou fork offer unparalleled handling on rough terrain. Shimano components take care of transmission, while parts from FSA, Tektro, DT Swiss and Fizik complete the spec.
