Review
The Ellsworth Truth was already a legend when I began taking my mountain biking seriously nearly a decade ago. It was a dream bike then as it is now and with the new "Absolute Truth" arriving for 2014, the legend not only continues, but just keeps getting better.
Ellsworth has been criticized in the past for sticking to 'handmade in the USA' alloy frames which result in high prices and the boutique badge we've become accustomed to with the brand. As you would expect though, when Tony decided to go carbon he didn't mess about with any old 'made in Asia' high modulus. The 'Rare Earth' carbon on the Absolute Truth made by Toray is top quality with a price to match.
I am not afraid to say I really like this bike and was fortunate to be able to ride many of the new carbon Ellsworth's at Interbike 2013. The Truth, with its 120mm travel, is light and nimble enough to still be classified as an XC bike and would be the perfect ride for endurance XC events. The tried and tested ICT (Instant Centre Tracking) design provides a great platform for riding singletrack fast but is also very forgiving when the trail gets a bit more rough and technical. Pedaling feedback is minimal: This bike is as efficient now as it was 10 years ago!
Component choice on this model is based around Shimano XT which is light, reliable and smooth. Other components match the drivetrain: reliable mid to high-end stuff that fit the bike well without getting too flashy or ballooning the cost.
Overall my only gripe is that even a basic specced Absolute Truth is beyond most people's bike budget. Fortunately there is still an alloy version available with the same geometry at a more affordable price. Mind you, if you have the cash and want arguably the most accomplished XC dual suspension design of the modern era this is your bike.
Picture it; Shimano XT groupset. Fox fork and rear shock. Essential parts from Thompson and FSA. Now picture yourself flowing in, out and all around your favorite trails and allowing the latest Absolute Truth carbon fiber frame to do its thang. The Absolute Truth Crbn 275 XT, is pure unadulterated, off-road pleasure. If you are still here reading and haven't already upgraded, check out the specifications page for all the details!
