Trek Domane 4.3 (2013)

Editor's Review

Pros

- Iso Speed
- Quality and finish

Cons

- Some Bontrager parts could be upgraded

Review

This is a stunning machine. The IsoSpeed decoupler and fork really sets this frame apart from other brands in the race to achieve high performance, yet provide insulation from harsh road surfaces.

The decoupler is basically a pivot like on a dual suspension mountain bike, which allows the seat tube to flex when put under load. The frame manages this while still remaining super stiff: quite an achievement. The sweep of the IsoSpeed fork similarly reduces harsh movement and vibration from bad road surfaces.

Drivetrain is typically Shimano 105, there is better value out there but you wouldn't get such a high tech frame. The only disappointment really was in some of the in-house Bontrager components which didn't seem to really match the quality of the frame itself.

As usual below $3,000, the wheels could be upgraded to something a bit lighter and livelier.

Overall a brilliant design, great performance. Top pick for the all-day rider looking for some comfort while retaining all the performance of a race bike.
