Review

First up, let's just say that our overall rating doesn't suggest this isn't a good bike, and what's more, there aren't that many budget bikes that look as wonderful as the metallic copper District 8. For this you could add a couple of points!

The District 8 is one of a handful of relaxed city/commute/cruise bikes that Trek has released for 2015. This bike oozes style and the steel frame is well designed for the bikes purpose. The smooth ride these frames possess is a crucial requirement for a city bike that will probably be used by an infrequent cyclist, or a commuter wanting a forgiving ride.

The steel frame is also perfectly designed to accept racks, panniers, and fenders without any hassle at all, making it a perfect addition to any urban cyclists quiver.

The downside is that the price point dictates the component level which is typified by the Shimano Altus/Acera gearing. This drivetrain is fine for recreational use but would hinder a rider wanting to travel long distances to work. These components, combined with the upright sitting position, clearly indicate this bike is not designed for that. The brakes are mechanical disc which is beneficial for all-weather riding, although the Tektro Novella's are strictly entry level.

The District 8 is a great bike for the recreational rider looking for a smooth, comfortable and cruisey urban ride and to look great doing it! The bike, as stated by Trek, "blends style and function," but I would recommend serious commuters look elsewhere for a bike more suited to longer distances and the rigors of daily riding.

Details

Classic styling means urban practicality in the District 8 from Trek. This smooth beauty has a sublime ride thanks to that steel frame and fork. Shimano and SRAM components team up to take care of drivetrain tasks, and Tektro mechanical discs add powerful braking. A Bontrager cockpit finishes the bike off nicely.
