Review

If you want to feel like a pro on the road but just don't have the right bike this could be for you! The Trek Madone 4.9 is a new model for 2014, featuring similar components to the higher 5 series models, but at a more affordable price-point. A classy paint job is the first thing we noticed which makes the 4 series bike stand out regardless of its "budget" billing.

The frameset on this machine is a stunning 4 Series carbon frame, made from the patented OCLV Trek 400 Series grade of carbon. This is a compromise between the dirty cheap and elite level of carbon. It's the perfect midpoint and offers a brilliant ride quality for half the price - get ready weekend warriors, this is your ride!

Components have been carefully crafted as opposed to being selected from the marketplace. Trek have fitted a full collection of their own Bontrager brand, to ensure the level of quality is maintained throughout the bike.

First off is the cockpit, with Bontrager Race handlebars and stem. After this is the Bontrager Race Carbon seatpost. Interestingly, the seatpost is an inserted post as opposed to the "seatmast" which mounts OVER a protruding seat column and is found on other models. This is a pity, as the seatmast system offers a supple ride feel due to added flex over rough terrain, but is no doubt in-line with price point.

To keep the rig rolling, Trek have fitted a pair of Bontrager Race wheels. These wheels are a reliable approach to performance, offering lightweight alloy rims with substantial lateral stiffness. Perfect for rocketing out of corners or dancing away up the climbs.

The real bling starts in the groupset, with the very snappy Shimano Ultegra Di2 standing out clearly. The redesigned appearance of these components adds a fresh shine to Shimano's lineup. The 11 speed cassette adds another dimension to an already outstanding ride, so there's not much left to want! The only downside is the FSA crank which isn't a personal favorite. I would have preferred to see the whole Ultegra hog here.

But after all the bling, it's back to the core of this bike - the frame. Trek have included ALL of their industry leading frame technology into this bike. From their KVF (Kammtail Virtual Foil) aero frame design through to the E2 Tapered headset. This means you'll be on the receiving end of a very impressive machine.

The Madone 4 series would suit someone looking for top-end design and performance with some budget considerations thrown in. The 4.9 could be raced and ridden daily without effort and offers excellent handling, balance and good road manners. Overall, a very appealing bike with plenty to offer in line with the performance that Trek promise...

Trek's Madone 4.9 offers incredible performance at a more down-to-earth price point. This race-bred machine features a lightweight carbon frame and fork, both of which are shaped to fight wind drag. A racy but slightly relaxed riding position is the order of the day on this bike. Shimano's Ultegra Di2 components shift with precision, and parts from FSA and Bontrager finish things off.
