Review

Trek is well known for its large range of Women's Specific Design (WSD) bikes. The company has invested much time and effort into creating a collection of bikes with different geometries and specifications to cater to women of all sizes and abilities. The Lexa SL sits in the entry-level category and is a great starting out point for beginner road cyclists and triathletes.

The frame is alloy with a carbon fork which is typical for this type of bike. The Lexa, though, offers the advantage of WSD H3 geometry, which increases the head tube height and shortens the top tube. The effect of this is to create a very upright, comfortable riding position. It also means that the Lexa SL is easy to ride and remains stable, controllable and smooth no matter the road conditions or skills of the rider.

Complimenting an excellent frame design is the use of a 10spd Tiagra drivetrain. These gears will remain reliable and easy to use for many years. Also of note is the option for a compact double or a triple crankset. This opens up the bike to many beginner cyclists who are still developing their fitness and strength.

The drawbacks to the Lexa SL is that an enthusiastic cyclist may outgrow the bike's potential fairly quickly. While the components will stand up over time, overall weight and geometry will hold back a rider looking to become more competitive or even start racing. In that case there is a good argument to spending another few hundred dollars on the Lexa SLX.

Overall a great starting point for a cyclist just learning the trade. The Lexa has a good combination of comfort and performance at a reasonable price. Test ride at your local bike shop.
