Review

When Scott first unveiled the Genius LT it effectively staked its claim in the "quiver killer" market. This is one sweet looking ride, but looks aren't everything, so what's under the bonnet?

The heart of this bike is the Equalizer 3 shock and associated TwinLoc lever which simultaneously switches the shock and fork between three modes, including for the first time ever on an mountain bike: full lockout. This allows the Genius to be ridden in hardtail mode up the climb. Traction mode for pedaling and then open all the way up for going down!

Putting the bike into hardtail mode effectively steepens the angles, yet this is still a pretty relaxed ride and the complete bike weight of 14.8kg(32.6lbs) means gravity is certainly against you.

Scott has done the right thing speccing a double chainring and bashguard, it definitely plays to the bikes obvious strengths. I was a little disappointed with some other component choices, for example the SRAM X5 shifters. Also for close to $4000 It would be nice to have slightly higher grade brakes, although in saying that these Shimano units work extremely well and there are certainly worse choices out there.

Components aside, it is the frame and suspension technology that set this bike apart and it is certainly a worthy investment if upgrading is your thing.

The Scott Genius was never meant to be an XC race mountain bike, just a bike, (and I don't say "just" lightly), that can be ridden up a hill then opened up to 185mm of travel and blasted back down again. Sounds to me like the true spirit of mountain biking. A "quiver killer?" Maybe not quite, but this is the closest bike I've seen to it yet and a true garage cleanser.

Description
