Review

Thank you, Raleigh, for the steel. Sometimes the contemporary road bike, as technically superior a computer designed carbon frame may be, becomes a bit boring and even lifeless - the insanely complicated carbon weaving and micrometer precision somehow steals the heart of a bike. Then along comes a steel frame with lugs and you remember why you got into cycling and wonder why you haven't grown a beard and started carrying a satchel... I'm joking of course - the Record Ace has too many gears to be a hipster bike. Perhaps, instead, you can wrap your torso with tires and start wearing wool... beard optional.

The Record Ace is a throwback to simpler times. The frame is made from Reynolds 631 butted chromoly, which may not be at the highest peaks of the steel hierarchy, but great nonetheless. I'm not going to say "steel is r..." sorry, I won't say it, but rest assured the smoothness of this stuff is profound compared to many other materials. The technological trickery required to make carbon feel good comes naturally out of the box with a frame made from Reynolds tubing.

Add to this a Campagnolo drivetrain and you have a bike that echoes classic road as you crunch the miles with a big smile. The Record Ace is a beautiful looking bike and you will appreciate it every time you throw a leg over.

At a shade under 2G, this isn't a cheap bike, but it's a bargain for any true cyclist with a passion for good bikes and classic feelings. Keep the carbon for the surgery of racing and the steely for when you just want to spend all day loving riding. This Raleigh is a testament to the most beautiful sport in the world. Thank you, Raleigh.
