Review

The Cannondale Contro series is a purpose-built, functional, and beautiful urban bike designed specifically for inner-city environments and even more specifically, commuting. Unfortunately this version (Contro1) isn't available in the US, who instead must settle for the Contro 3. The main differences are the Contro 3 uses a rigid Lefty fork and runs a 10spd Deore drivetrain. Apart from that the two bikes look very similar!

The Contro is designed from the outset to be a functional urban commuting bike. This is achieved by designing an integrated package with mud guards, pannier racks, dynamo light, and a kickstand built-in. As well as these specifications, the frame is designed around an upright sitting posture which is perfect for not only comfort, but also gives brilliant visibility when maneuvering through a typically dangerous inner city environment.

The Contro 1 uses a Shimano Alfine 8spd hub gearing system mated to a Gates belt drive. This is a perfect setup for commuting cyclists (no snapped chain or bent derailleur preventing you getting to work on time!) This model also uses the venerable Headshok Fatty with 50mm travel - just enough to aid control. The front hub is the Alfine Dynamo which charges the Supernova light (they really thought of everything!)

If there are any corners cut it certainly isn't the brakes which are Magura MT4 Hydraulics Perhaps overkill for such a cruisy bike, but who's really complaining?

This bike is a brilliant option for inner city commuters and is ready to ride from the box. It has some great looks, is a handy platform for steering through the city, and is one of the best, most feature packed options for getting to work safely. If you like stealth black this could well be your bike.
