Upso is a U.K.-based company that produces bags for cyclists, from messenger bags to saddlebags, all from recycled materials. The novel source the company has found is the truck tarp; exceptionally durable, it makes a great material for cyclists, who have been known to treat their gear with a certain lack of gentility. All products are available directly from the company, via its online shop.

Upso is a new brand from Carradice, with its own mindset and mission. All bags are constructed by hand in a single building, with solar panels powering the sewing machines. Every product is unique; the panniers are unpaired, even. Given the source material, it is quite unlikely that a matching set can be had.

The bags, aside from their unusual provenance, are indeed quite tough. Resistant to water, with well-designed closures and anchor points, with a style distinct to each and every one. In addition to the truck tarps Upso recycles fire hoses (zipper pulls) and seatbelt webbing (reinforcements).

A plethora of styles are available, including a number suited for off-the-bike expeditions. The totebags are simple but functional, each with a small external pocket for quick access. The packs are available in a range of sizes, from a smaller day pack suitable for school or short trips up to a large expandable rucksack, with voluminous interiors and a laptop pocket. Duffels, a small wallet, messenger bags, all constructed solidly and unique.

On the bike, there are seatpacks and panniers, the latter available in a standard size and a special version fitting Brompton folding bikes. Nice touches abound, from one-hand closures to internal dividers.

Upso makes good bags in an unusual way. If you find yourself looking for a new tote, take a look at the company's catalogue. Perhaps they will have a bag for you.
