Strida is a manufacturer of folding bikes, currently wholly owned by Ming Cycle of Tiawan. They produce four models, all based on the original design, with variations in style, accessories, gearing systems, and wheel. Availability is through distributors throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia.

The history of Strida is an interesting one. Mark Sanders, an Industrial Design Engineering student at the Imperial College in London, conceives the original design and creates a prototype as part of his graduate studies. In 1985, partnering with James Marshall, production design and setup begins, the first bikes rolling off the Glasgow assembly line in 1987. The next year the Strida sweeps the Cyclex awards and takes off. Production expands rapidly, moving to Nottingham, to Portugal, back to the UK. Production rights move from one UK company to another, then to the US, and finally to Ming, first manufacturer and later owner of the brand. Previous to Ming's ownership, the Strida was available in a single model; since that time the company has expanded the line to four.

The current line of Stridas includes the three-speed Evo, mag-wheeled LT, 18"-wheeled SX, and the original, now up to model 5.0. The basic folding design offers two compelling features: the main body of the bike is constructed of three main tubes, none of which is broken, and its folded state rolls easily along, similar to a stroller, in a long, slender package. Non-structural options range from simple color selection, models offering from two to seven possibilities, to choice of accessories, with plastic and alloy available.

Half work of art, half convenient portable bike, the Strida is a great addition to the cycling world. Visit your local shop or Strida's website and check one out for yourself.
